Learning Agreement and Study Requirements for Non-Degree Incoming Students

Your study plan is established and endorsed by your home University, which issues and signs your Learning Agreement. Your study plan must then be officially accepted and endorsed by the course coordinator at Poli. The Learning Agreement must contain at least a total of 12 credits per semester or at least 3 disciplines/courses offered and taught in/by Poli.

Changes to the initial Learning Agreement

Please note that we cannot guarantee your registration to all disciplines proposed in your Learning Agreement because the places in some courses are limited. Any course changes can be made one/two weeks after the beginning of the classes.

Conversion – Poli Credits x ECTS

This regulation aims to standardize the conversion of grades received at USP and grades received at foreign institutions, in the ambit of the Undergraduate Committee of the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo.

There are three different cases:

1) The foreign institution uses the ECTS standard for accounting grades.
In that case, the following conversion is to be adopted (in both ways; that is, be it for converting USP grades into ECTS grades or for converting ECTS grades into USP grades):
1 USP lesson grade = 1.25 ECTS grade;
1 USP assignment grade = 1.25 ECTS grade.
For example, a discipline with 4 lesson grades and 0 assignment grades is worth 5 ECTS grades, just as a discipline with 2 lesson grades and 2 assignment grades is worth 5 ECTS grades. A discipline taken abroad with 10 ECTS grades is worth 8 USP lesson grades when the student returns to Brazil.

2) The foreign institution does not directly use the ECTS standard for accounting grades, but presents a rule for converting its grades and ECTS grades.
In that case, the conversion of the institution grades into ECTS grades or vice-versa is to be adopted, and the recommendation of the previous case is to be followed.

3) The foreign institution does not follow the ECTS standard.
In that case, the student applying for the conversion compulsorily has to present documents indicating the total number of grades of the course abroad in which the disciplines have been taken, and the ideal number of semesters of the referred course. M is to indicate the average number of grades by semester of the course abroad (obtained by dividing the total number of grades of the course by the total number of semesters).

The conversion of the X lesson grades obtained abroad and the Y USP lesson grades is:
Y= ZX/M,
where Z is the average number of grades by semester of the USP course in which the student has been enrolled (obtained by dividing the total number of lesson grades of the course by the total number of semesters of the course).

For example, consider a student who has successfully obtained 10 grades at a university abroad in an 8-semester course, with the number of grades equal to 160. In that case, M = 160/8 = 20. Suppose the student has been enrolled in a course totaling 260 lesson grades in 10 semesters. Therefore, the average number of grades per semester of the USP course is 26. In that case, the 10 grades received abroad are converted into 13 USP lesson grades (since 13 = 26 10 /20).
